Lady Rams fight hard, fall to 2nd place South Johnston 44-25

The Lady Rams defense was awesome in the 1st quarter Tuesday night holding South Johnston to just one single free throw in the first 9 minutes of play. The Rams actually let early in the 2nd quarter on Courtney Morris' three point shot. "We got out to a good start defensively in the first half. Anytime you hold a team to one point in any quarter, that's pretty good. But we just wore down as the game moved into the third quarter, said coach Danehower."

Playing short handed was nothing new for the Lady Rams as they were playing their fourth game without injured point guard Mo Torres. However tonight was a different story due to illness and other circumstances, Cleveland began the game with only 2 subs. In the first three minutes they would need to call on the bench with center Deanne Roberson sidelined with two first quarter fouls. Still they Rams did not give up trailing 17-10 at halftime.Sam Hollon came in and gave us some good minutes tonight and grabbed a career high 4 rebounds."

"We just were not able to score the timely basket again tonight. Courtney Ireland playing out of her normal position of post, again did a great job of playing on the perimeter and had several shots that seemed to rim out just before they went through the net."

"I am not disappointed in their efforts as they played with toughness and perseverance throughout the game, said Danehower. We have to continue to improve and play the last few games out and look to build for next year. These last few games are very important for the future of our program."

The Lady Rams will travel to Triton on Friday for the last regular season game Friday before getting ready for the ECC tournament next week.

Lady Rams fall to Triton in home finale

The Lady Rams playing their third straight game without point guard Mo Torres, fell to Triton 48-28 in ECC play Friday night. The Rams were led by Courtney Morris' nine points and Courtney Ireland put in 8 points. Jasmine Richards chipped in six points, three steals and three assists. Angel Chuckwu had four points and four rebounds. Dae Dae Roberson chipped in a first quarter bucket, a free throw and a rebound. Taeja Fitzgearld grabbed four rebounds in relief of Morris.

The Rams began the game positively breaking Triton's full court press three times in the first period for scores by Courtney Morris and Dae Dae Roberson. The game was tight until 3 minutes into the second quarter Morris went down with an ankle injury. Normally when a starter goes down you see a drop in intensity, but in this case the Lady Rams seems more determined to overcome this latest setback.

"Our intensity really picked up when Court (Morris) went out. Jasmine Richardson and Courtney Ireland were responsible for the rams intensity, said Chris Danehower, Rams Head coach. "They just seems determined that this would not determine the game. In fact the Rams deficit when from 6 to 4 as the Lady Rams trailed by just four at halftime.

The second half we could not get a timely stop defensively and we could not score once they changed their defense to Man. "With our injuries, we are having to put some girls in positions they are not the most comfortable with, but in the end this will help them become better players.  Right now we are focused on daily improvement and concentrating on the things we can do and the things we can control", said Danehower.

The Rams will travel to South Johnston on Tuesday. Game starts at 6:30 pm.

Lady Rams fall to league leading CB Aycock

The Lady Rams fell to ECC leader CB Aycock on Tuesday 44-29. The Rams were led in scoring by Courtney Ireland and Courtney Morris with ten and nine respectively.

Jasmine Richardson led the Lady Rams (9-11, 2-7) in steals with seven to go with four assists both season highs along with scoring four points. Angel Chuckwu led the rebounding effort with a season high seven and scored a basket. Dae Dae Roberson chipped in four points and five rebounds for the Rams as well.

As a team the Lady Rams has a season low 10 turnovers despite missing point guard Monique Torres for the second straight game with a sprain ankle. "I though we came out and played had and with passion in the first half but I think as the game wore on we got tired and had a few mental lapses on the defensive end", said head coach Chris Danehower. In the second half we executed our offense but could not get our shots to fall, I suspect this is primarily due to fatigue. The effort is there and we have to keep working to finish our possessions and put some points on the board.

The Lady Rams will wrap up their home schedule with a game vs. Triton on Friday February 4th. Come support these ladies as they wind down a successful 1st season at Cleveland High School.

Lady Rams win defensive game in 1st Round of Wallace Rose-Hill Tournament

A 4pm game is not the best time to start a Monday game and it showed Monday night as neither Cleveland or West Brunswick could find the range in the 1st half of their game. However the Rams outscored West Brunswick in the second half to seal a 40-34 win to get improve to 8-3 in their first season.

"We weren't finishing our shots in the first half tonight, but like we have done so far this season, we just kept working on the defensive end", said coach Chris Danehower. "I challenged them at halftime to create some more energy on the floor. Our bench did a good job of doing just that by cheering loud when we made a positive play."

The Lady Rams responded with a 8-0 run to begin the second half and snagged as 17-12 lead halfway through the 3rd quarter. The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter as Cleveland held a 24-19 advantage to begin the 4th.

The Lady Rams will play in the 2nd round of the tournament tonight at Wallace Rose-Hill High school. The game is slated to begin at 7pm.

Lady Rams win @ Corinth Holders improve to 3-2 on the season

The Cleveland Girls Basketball team took control of a tight game midway through the second quarter and never looked back defeating it's sister school Corinth Holders 35-24 Friday evening.

Courtney Ireland recorded her third straight Double-Double netting 14 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was Courtney Morris with 13 points to go along with 2 steals. Monique Torres added a free throw, to complete the scoring. Torres also had 3 assists and three steals. Dea Dea Roberson and Angel Chuckwu combined for 7 boards, and three steals.

"I think this game taught us that you have to be at your best every game in order to win on the road", said Coach Chris Danehower.. "We missed some easy opportunities early in the 1st quarter and Corinth did a good job of taking advantage of our missed opportunities. Jasmine Richard really stepped up tonight when we had a little foul trouble and really steadied the ship for us. Some players did not have their best night, but others stepped up and took things on their shoulders. If we can keep that kind of teamwork going, we could do some interesting things."

Practice plans for Thanksgiving weekend

Realizing we will all need a break from basketball next week. We are going to have practice on Saturday at 5pm. We are going to have a later practice on Saturday to give families a chance to get back from their Thanksgiving travels.

Don't forget we have a game on Monday November 29th.

Coach D

A learning scrimmage with Garner

We had a pre-season scrimmage with Garner last night. While we don't keep official score of the game, we did keep up with some statistics.

These are just estimates but this gives us a foundation to build upon.
27 turnovers
11 baskets including 4 while being fouled while shooting
18 rebounds
7 steals
5 assists

Overall a good experience for the girls. This was a good team to play because of their athletic ability. For the most part we were aggressive and played hard. We are going to focus on cutting down on the turnovers and finishing those shots.
